Why You Need to Ask Questions
Heating work involves gas lines, electrical connections, and high-temperature components. A mistake can be dangerous or expensive to fix. When you invite a contractor into your home, you deserve to know that they are qualified and that their work will hold up. Asking the right questions before you agree to anything helps you avoid surprises and ensures you are comparing apples to apples.
Not every contractor works the same way. Some use subcontractors, some charge by the hour, and some offer flat-rate pricing. The equipment brands they carry may differ, and the warranties they offer can vary. By asking a few pointed questions, you can tell which firm is a good fit for your situation. The answers also reveal how a contractor communicates and whether they take the time to explain things.
Start with Licensing and Insurance
Ask the contractor whether they are licensed to do heating work in your area and whether they carry general liability and workers' compensation insurance. A licensed contractor has passed a test and met the requirements of your state or local board. Insurance protects you if someone gets hurt on your property or if the work damages your home. Ask for proof and verify it before the job starts.
Do not assume that a license covers everything. Some contractors are licensed as HVAC contractors, while others hold a general contractor license. Ask specifically about heating and air conditioning. Find out who will be on site. Some companies send a salesperson for the estimate and then a different crew for the work. Trust your instincts. If a contractor is vague about their process or unwilling to put things in writing, that is a reason to move on.
